Neruda: Oda a La Bella Desnuda/Ode to a Beautiful Nude, Fall 2004

Oda a la bella desnuda/Ode to a Beautiful Nude is a unique artist book, which includes the poem written by Pablo Neruda, with seven original drawings by Manuel Neri. The poem Oda a la bella desnuda was included in Neruda’s book of poems Nuevas odas elementales, first published in 1955, © Pablo Neruda and Fundación Pablo Neruda; and published in English in Selected Poems by Pablo Neruda, edited by Nathaniel Tarn and published by Jonathan Cape Ltd., London, © 1970 Jonathan Cape Ltd., translated into English by Nathaniel Tarn. The ink, charcoal, and graphite drawings by Manuel Neri are studies done in 1983 for a series of marble relief sculptures, and were selected by Manuel Neri to accompany the poem for this book. The Introduction was written in English by Mary Julia Klimenko and translated into Spanish by Jaime Moreno Villareal. The layout and calligraphy of the text was designed and executed by Thomas Ingmire on Somerset Satin Soft White in the Fall of 2004.

The binding structure for the book was designed by Daniel E. Kelm at the Wide Awake Garage in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The book is bound in goatskin leather, with unique leather onlays, hand-tooling and stamping in gold and palladium leaf. The leather binding for the book has been designed and produced by Daniel E. Kelm, Kylin Lee and other mechanics at the Wide Awake Garage in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The book is housed in a slipcase covered in Japanese bookcloth by Linda Lembke at Green River Bindery in Guilford, Vermont.
